Obedience Training Your Dog or Puppy
Obedience training is one of the best things
you can do for your dog or puppy and
yourself. Obedience training doesn't solve
all behavior problems, but it is the
foundation for solving just about any
problem. Training opens up a line of
communication between you and your dog.
Effective communication is necessary to
instruct your dog about what you want
him/her to do. Positive-reinforcement
methods are becoming the standard in dog
training; however, in handling and training
high drive and aggressive dogs with
positive- reinforcement techniques there is
more than just patting your dog on head and
saying, "Good boy!" In our program you will
learn how to communicate and understand your
dog.
There are three phases to training your dog:
The teaching phase, the correction phase,
and the proofing phase.
The teaching phase is where I teach
the dog the association between a command
and a physical action on the dog's part (for
example, to sit).
The correction phase is where I teach
the dog that the obedience commands are not
optional and that he or she must do them the
first time we give a command.
The
proofing phase is where I expose the
dog to various new environments and
distractions.
The most difficult phases are the first two
phases. In the learning phase you
must be consistent and provide endless
opportunities for repetition (practice,
practice, practice) to enable the dog to
make a strong and permanent association
between the commands and the actions on each
of the commands taught. In this phase we
must be sensitive to the dog's temperament
and personality and be both psychologist and
motivator, helping the dog to understand.
Problem solving skills are crucial on the
part of the trainer, as well as having the
time available to devote quality time to
accomplish the training goals. In the
correction phase we must teach the dog
corrections, how to respond to them, and the
same principles of time, patience and
consistency are necessary
The basic commands for obedience:
SIT on one command,
DOWN on one command,
COME when called,
STAY (in a sit or a down position) UNTIL
released,
HEEL at your side, sitting automatically
when you halt .
We also teach your dog how to properly greet
people without jumping up and how to go
through doors and gates under control. YOUR
JOB is then to maintain this training.
